“I can’t believe it - my heart burst with pride seeing my child, who’s usually quite anxious in crowds, on the pitch in front of thousands.”
On Thursday 22nd May, members of the AllChild Wigan team brought nearly 300 people - children, parents, carers and staff - to experience the energy and excitement of a Super League match between Leigh Leopards and Hull FC. The event was delivered in partnership with Leigh Community Trust, one of AllChild’s key delivery partners in the region.
In total, 116 AllChild children from across our seven Wigan schools were offered a free ticket to the match, along with a ticket for a parent or carer. Many families chose to purchase additional tickets, bringing AllChild’s total presence at the match close to 300 attendees, an extraordinary turnout and a strong reflection of the power of community.
From the moment they arrived, young people were immersed in an unforgettable experience. The night began with a high-energy Bon Jovi tribute act that had children and Link Workers on their feet dancing. Just before the match kicked off, AllChild children and their Link Workers were invited onto the pitch to wave giant flags in front of the roaring crowd at the Leopard Den, complete with fireworks as players entered the stadium.
They returned to the pitch at half-time for a parade in front of the fans, and after the match, many had the chance to meet Leigh Leopards players, with signed shirts and rugby balls making treasured mementoes.
This event wasn’t just about sport. It was about confidence, connection, and creating positive shared memories.
“This was the best day of my life. I really enjoyed it!” – Y3 girl, Newton Westpark“How good was last night Miss? I’d definitely go again!” – Y8 boy, The Westleigh School“I can’t believe I am so close to one of my heroes. I love AllChild. Thank you!” – Y5 boy, Westleigh Methodist
The response from parents was equally moving. One shared,
“I can’t believe it - my heart burst with pride seeing my child, who’s usually quite anxious in crowds, on the pitch in front of thousands.”
Another added,
“Thank you so much for the invite. The kids had a blast and thank you so much for all your work with Bella. She has really taken to you and that’s amazing. Makes me so proud that we have such a great team to help us. Keep doing what you’re doing!”
Heather from Leigh Community Trust also reflected on the strength of collaboration:
“I am so glad that everyone had a great time. It's amazing that by working together we can provide these experiences for the young people of Leigh.”
This event is a powerful example of AllChild’s place-based model in action. By partnering with trusted local organisations and schools, we create opportunities that build confidence, tackle disengagement, and support long-term attendance and wellbeing.
A huge thank you to Leigh Community Trust, the Leigh Leopards, and the amazing team in Wigan who made this event possible - and most importantly, to the young people and families who brought such joy and pride to the day.
