Science meets art at Imperial College London

July 30, 2025

This summer, 20 enthusiastic children from Avonmore and Wendell Park primary schools took part in a vibrant three-day Creative Roots workshop, organised by Imperial College London's Outreach Team. Designed for Key Stage 2 students, the workshop offered a unique chance to explore local habitats through the combined lenses of science and art, blending education with creativity.

Guided by a PhD scientist and a professional artist, students became active investigators of the natural world. Whether examining specimens through microscopes, sketching their surroundings, or creating self-portraits with collage, the children were fully immersed in hands-on learning. School grounds and nearby green spaces became sites of discovery and artistic expression.

Over the three days, students collaborated on activities that encouraged observation, planning, visualisation, and reflection. Using both scientific tools and artistic techniques, they explored, interpreted, and shared information about their local environment. From nature-inspired art to microscopic analysis, the workshop revealed how science and art can work together to deepen our understanding of the world.

The sessions also promoted environmental awareness and critical thinking. Students explored local biodiversity and reflected on how their actions affect ecosystems, gaining a sense of responsibility and curiosity about the natural world.

At the end of the workshop, students shared their work, collages, sketches, and discoveries in a joyful celebration of creativity, teamwork, and learning. One child summed it up best: “I want to stay here forever.”

Children loved wearing lab coats “They made me feel smart!” and raved about the creative sessions: “I liked making my face with the collage,” “The collage was so fun,” and “I really liked the art part.” Fun games like Pictionary and Grandma’s Footsteps added laughter and helped new friendships bloom, making the experience both educational and unforgettable.
